Hiring a Compliance Professional for a Fintech Business: How to Define the Role

Posted on 02 October 2026

A fintech compliance vacancy can attract candidates with very different backgrounds. One may have built policies for a new business. Another may have managed monitoring in an established institution. Both can be capable, but they may be suited to different stages of your organisation.

For employers in the UAE and wider Middle East, the starting point is a clear description of the work. A familiar job title will not tell candidates which problems they are being hired to solve.

  • Define the business context

  • Describe the products, customers and activities the role will support.

  • Explain whether the business is preparing to launch, expanding an existing service or improving established controls.

  • These details help a recruiter distinguish directly relevant experience from experience that is transferable but will require development.

Identify the applicable regulatory framework with your legal or compliance advisers before finalising the brief. Authorisation requirements should be checked for the specific role and jurisdiction. For example, the DFSA has a separate process for Authorised Individuals and Key Individuals; that should not be treated as a universal process for every UAE fintech business.

  • Make the responsibilities concrete

  • Replace broad phrases such as “manage all compliance” with defined deliverables.

  • Possible responsibilities might include maintaining policies, coordinating monitoring, advising internal teams or tracking remediation.

  • State which responsibilities belong elsewhere and who approves decisions.

A useful brief should answer four questions:

  • What must this person deliver in the first three months?

  • Who will they report to and escalate concerns to?

  • What team, systems and external support will they have?

  • Which decisions can they make independently?

Avoid combining several distinct functions into one vacancy without considering the workload and governance arrangements.

Ask for evidence of judgement In an interview, ask candidates to explain a situation where a business proposal raised a compliance concern. What information did they request? How did they explain the issue? Who made the final decision, and how was the outcome recorded?

This gives more insight than asking whether they can work in a fast-paced environment. Look for a clear account of their own contribution and an ability to communicate with colleagues outside compliance. Use a fictional scenario if you want to explore their approach; do not request confidential material from a previous employer.

Agree how success will be assessed Write a short scorecard before interviews begin. Separate essential experience from knowledge that can be developed with support. Include communication, escalation judgement and delivery as well as technical knowledge, with the technical assessment led by the employer's qualified specialists.
